Family Triathlon

The family triathlon is back in 2017 as part of the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon in Markeaton Park on Sunday July 23.

During the JBTT lunchtime break – the family triathlon will start with a 50m swim in the lake then head out onto the closed roads for a 2.5km cycle before a 750m run – crossing the same finishing line as the JBTT triathletes.

Entry for the family challenge is free to enter and available to children aged seven and over who compete alongside an adult.

This year money will be raised for Barnardo’s and people are able to donate online or ask for a fundraising pack to be sent out to them.

Event Information

“I’m delighted to be working with another fantastic charity for this year’s triathlon. Your support is crucial in helping to transform the lives of children and if every triathlete participating in the event donated just £5 or £10 we could help to make a real difference to a wonderful and truly important cause.”

Alternative Parking for JBT Family Triathlon participants
If you are only taking part in the family triathlon and are arriving after the road closure time (08:45) you will be able to park in the field behind the Famous Trains building on Markeaton Park. Marshals will guide you to a parking spot. There is no height restriction to get into the field. There is a £4 charge for parking.

As a final desperate measure you could also park in the general car park. There is a height restriction on this car park and a parking charge of £4.40 for the day.

Spectator and general public parking at Markeaton Park is very limited so we would advise parking in the city centre and getting to the park via bus, bike or foot. Please see the Road Closures page for more information.
Trent Barton will be arranging regular buses from the bus station to Markeaton Park on the hour, every hour. However, the Allestree bus service will be diverted away from Kedleston Road onto Mansfield Road so will take a bit longer.

Family Triathlon FAQ’s

Minimum age for children taking part is 7 years old and maximum age is 14 years old. There’s no age limit for adults!
50m swim in the lake, 2.5km bike ride (on closed roads), 750m run in the park.
Yes, your child must be able to swim 50m and you must accompany them throughout the event.
No. Everyone will have a 15 minute to get in to the water (Start Times TBC). All we ask is that you sign in with the Event Official at swim entry so that we can keep track of who is getting in and out of the water.
The lake is up to 7ft deep the further out you get. You enter the lake via a swim ramp so you can walk down into the water, then just start swimming towards the big red HUUB buoy. Go around the buoy and come back into land again.
There are three motorised dinghys on the lake who will ensure everyone is safe in the water. We will also have swim marshals on the side to help you in and out of the water; they may also swim out to help you if required!
The bike route is on paths/road so any bike will do as long as it is roadworthy (ie. the brakes work)
Swim – as it’s in the lake you may want to wear a wetsuit with your swimsuit/trisuit underneath. If you are swimming in open water for the first time we would recommend that you do wear one from a safety point of view.
Swim – swimsuit, goggles. You will be provided with a swim hat when you register for the event.
Bike – bike and helmet are compulsory! Other than that, Tshirt, shorts, trisuit, whatever you feel comfortable in.
Run – trainers
Yes. When you register for the event both of you will get race numbers. These can be pinned on the back and front of the top you are cycling/running in; alternatively if you have a number belt, it can be clipped on the belt and put on before you start your cycle
You should be able to do both. Email us at to let us know you are doing both, that way we can ensure we put you in an appropriate wave in the morning.
Please let us know if you need to change any element of the entry as we will need to update our records so that insurance does not become invalidated.
Parking is available at various locations around the park. We will send out the relevant information nearer the time of the event
Please contact us at if you have any further questions.
